What is insomnia

Insomnia is a sleep is a symptom of the disorder include difficulty repeatedly to sleep or maintaining sleep-although there is a chance for it. Insomnia is usually caused by a disruption in the timing and mechanism of sleep and unhealthy behaviors (such as irregular hours of sleep, often staying up and the use of caffeine) .Insomnia is part of a sleep disorder, but these complaints are the most common complaints of sleep disorders. Some sleep problems among others, insomnia, narcolepsy, hypersomnia and apnea.

Insomnia is often caused by a disease or as a result of psychological problems. In this case, medical or psychological help will be needed. One of the psychological therapies that effectively deal with insomnia is cognitive therapy. In such therapy, a patient is taught to improve sleep habits and eliminate counter-productive assumptions about sleep.

According lopez (2011) insomnia is failure to initiate and maintain sleep. According to ISO Pharmacotherapy is unable to sleep insomnia, abnormal dependence. People who experience insomnia have the quality and quantity of sleep are less so when you wake up, insomniacs feel fresh and still sleppy.

There be some factors that cause insomnia ie internal factors and external factors. Internal factors causing insomnia are physical limitations and stress. While external factors cause of insomnia for example insomnia at a student who was working on a thesis is an academic, a research and reference. External factors cause the insomnia that is the academic provision, the length of the bureaucratic process in the study, and the limitations of existing references.

The negative impact insomnia is a decrease in activity, health problems and a decrease in mood. The Positive impact insomnia is achieving the target of a job or task to be completed, if the patients with insomnia were multiple tasks or jobs.

Insomnia can be divided into four types: early insomnia, frequent waking, preparing for sleep and insomnia late.

Many insomniacs dependent on sleeping pills and other sedatives substances to be rested.

There are three types of insomnia, namely:

1. Hard to sleep (sleep onset insomnia),

2. Always woke up in the middle of the night (sleep maintenance insomnia),

3. Always wake up much faster than desired (early awakening insomnia).

In the United States, approximately a third of the population have sleep disorders. While in Indonesia, sleep disorders vary, depending on the job they have. Jobs which resulted in disruption of the sleep cycle-such as nurses, doctors and security guards, very big cause of sleep disorders in these individuals. There are studies that prove that 70% of nurses in Jakarta experiencing insomnia.

Insomnia is more common in women than men, with a ratio of 3: 2. With age also increased the incidence of sleep disorders.

Classification of insomnia in adults is

Primary Insomnia A.

- Indiopatic insomnia (insomnia with no known cause) = insomnia in children are settled, not reduced / improved.

- Insomnia Psychology

- Insomnia Paradoxikal = insomnia characterized by a mismatch between the patients description of sleep duration and objective of polysomnographic (One method for studying sleep)


B. Secondary Insomnia

- Insomnia adjustment = insomnia associated with the stressor (pressure) psychosocial

- Inadequate sleep hygiene = insomnia because of the lifestyle, habits that destroy / disturb sleep

- Insomnia due to a psychiatric disorder = insomnia due to an active psychiatric disorders such as anxiety and depression

- Insomnia due to medical conditions = insomnia due to conditions such as sore pain, chronic pain, nocturnal cough, shortness of breath or fever.

- Insomnia due to substance certain = insomnia due to consumption or discontinuation of medication / treatment, caffeine.
