So you are ready to build up your family!
But you have started worrying as your female partner is unable to
conceive after months of trying. You have started informing people
around you, they respond you by saying "just relax". Another month goes
and people respond the same tales, "hope for the best". If you are
using "wait and watch policy", we consider you are wrong. Know why!
The American Society of Reproductive Medicine released a revised
definition of infertility in 2008 which states, "Infertility is a
disease, defined by the failure to achieve pregnancy after 12 months or
more of regular unprotected intercourse.
When is it time to see a fertility specialist?
Seeking fertility treatment is important as it affects so many
families for different reasons. Each person is different and if you are
thinking about achieving pregnancy soon then it will also depend on your
treatment and that too differs from person to person. Here are some
general considerations to help evaluate your personal situation and
decide if a fertility specialist can help you grow your family.
- Blocked fallopian tubes at any age
- Female age of about 35 or older
- Endometriosis at any age
- Tubal problems – such as ectopic pregnancy
- Low Sperm count in male partner
- Irregular periods
- Ovulation problems such as polycystic ovary syndrome
- Abnormal ovarian reserve tests
Fertility Treatment- Who is really there for your first appointment?
For complete fertility testing, you should see an
obstetrician/gynecologist with special training and experience in
fertility problems. This doctor may be called a reproductive endocrinologist or fertility specialist.
What can you expect at the first appointment?
You first appointment will not last more than two hours. Your
partner should assist you to the consultation. You need to be prepared
and make sure you have brought all the records of medical history.
What happens at your first appointment?
At the initial evaluation, you will meet with the physician who will
review your reproductive history and develop a testing and treatment
plan.
